Double Yolks and Table Scraps

Since I was young my favorite breakfast has always been fried eggs and toast with a big glass of milk. Part of the joy of having farm fresh eggs is the possibility of cracking open an egg to find a double yolk - which is always a treat. Today was our first day that the chickens layed a dozen eggs. Since the weather has been below zero for the last week I have been checking for eggs 3-4 times a day. This morning I found only one. After church I checked and found 7 more, and then before I went to bed there were 4 more eggs. Our family and friends have been enjoying fresh eggs as well since we are harvesting way more than we can consume.

One thing that we learned recently is that chickens will eat just about anything. While visiting our friends we saw a gallon ice cream bucket next to the sink filled with table scraps. When I asked them about it they said it was for the neighbors chickens. I had no idea the stuff they would eat. So we got our own table scraps bucket this week and started feeding all of our table scraps to the chickens. If you look closely you’ll see fruit loops, waffles, grilled cheese sandwiches, egg shells, toast, pizza crust and more. They especially love fruit and vegetable scraps and peelings. Since feeding table scraps they have consumed far less layers pellets. It’s nice to save money on feed as well as recycle. I hope to make some nice fertilizer for my garden with the chicken droppings.
